Phoebe Philo, the former designer for Celine, once said, “build a wardrobe rather than focus on trends.” This notion rings true when you are beginning to build a capsule wardrobe. When we base our wardrobe off what is trendy, then we’ll find that it’s hard to find anything to wear!
Not only is a capsule wardrobe an important portion toward defining your style, but it will help give you the proper foundation for a functional wardrobe.
I talk about this in greater detail in my book, How to Find Your Signature Style: A Guide to the 12 Signature Style Archetypes. Today, we’ll get into that chapter and go over the basics.

A capsule wardrobe is most likely one of those phrases that you have been hearing for a while. Essentially, a capsule wardrobe an idea that limits your closet to a certain amount of interchangeable, high-quality outfits to make it easier for you to dress to impress. This collection may include jewelry, accessories, or shoes, that you can mix and match to your heart’s content.
The idea of a capsule wardrobe is a pretty minimalistic approach to refining your appearance. When you are initially trying to organize your wardrobe, it serves as a guide to help you put together versatile pieces for any occasion. In fact, with the right formula, you can have a capsule wardrobe for every event including vacations, practical wear, going out, attending a formal event, for a professional setting, loungewear, and so on.
What is the capsule wardrobe formula?
Before you even get to mixing and matching clothing, it is important to get one thing straight: your routine.
What is your daily routine? What does your lifestyle look like? Are you constantly in professional settings? Are you on the go often and seeking a more comfortable wardrobe? These are crucial to the anatomy of your capsule wardrobe as they help lay the foundation for which type of pieces you will add.
Not everyone should have the same type of capsule because not everyone has the same lifestyle or signature style. If your signature style is more of the Bon Vivant, your capsule probably won’t look like the Minimalista’s.
Most people do not consider breaking up their capsule into something that I call segments. A segment is a group of clothing that mixes well with each other — try to look at them as the heart of your capsule wardrobe. Segments produce 12 outfits.
Here is what a segment in your capsule wardrobe should include:
- 1-2 outer layers
- Three tops
- Two bottoms
When you combine 2-3 segments, you can have anywhere from 72 to 216 outfit combinations at your discretion, thus creating your capsule.
Example of a segment from a capsule. When you build 2-3 segments, you have created a capsule wardrobe.
Building the perfect capsule wardrobe is fundamentally simple. I am here to help you take the guesswork out of finding a wardrobe that speaks to your personal tastes and lifestyle. If I can do it, so can you!
